TL;DR
Automation Engineer (Manufacturing): Designing and refining intelligent control systems for a cultured meat factory with an accent on the intersection of software, hardware, and biological processes. Focus on building autonomous factory operations, integrating IO components, and improving system robustness under real operating conditions.
Location: Must be based in or be able to relocate to Sydney, Australia (Hybrid, predominantly on-site in Alexandria)

What you will do
- Iterate on and improve existing factory automation systems, tuning PIDs and setting up alerts.
- Design and deliver new automation logic and hardware to replace manual operator steps.
- Procure and install IO components (sensors, valves, pumps) and debug communication interfaces such as Modbus, OPC-UA, and MQTT.
- Collaborate with process development engineers to translate biological requirements into automation specifications.
- Partner with software engineers to evolve the in-house Process Control platform.
- Manage competing demands from operators and production teams to prioritize high-impact work.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Systems, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or equivalent professional experience.
- Experience deploying and supporting control or automation systems in production environments.
- Foundational understanding of at least one modern programming language (Python, C++, Javascript/Typescript).
- Solid understanding of mechanical and electrical principles relevant to automated equipment.
- Location: Must be based in or be able to relocate to Sydney, Australia; predominantly on-site presence required.
- Proactive communication and solution-oriented mindset.
Nice to have
- Specific knowledge of protocols like Modbus, OPC-UA, MQTT, IO-Link, or EtherNet/IP.
- Experience with AI-assisted development and debugging tools.
