2D Prop & Environment Designer (Animation)

TL;DR

2D Prop & Environment Designer (Animation): Designing environments and props based on the show's style, from concept through to final approved artwork, for a brand new 2.5D production, with an accent on visual idea development, design exploration, composition, and conveying story through artwork. Focus on researching and exploring from provided references and spatial planning, working within given briefs, and elevating the aesthetic and visual development process in collaboration with the Art Director and Directors.

Location: Hybrid/Remote within the UK. Must be based in the UK and have the right to work in the UK.

What you will do

• Contribute to the creative briefing process and bring creative ideas aligned with the specified brief.
• Create loose design ideas, including rough sketches and compositional elements, during the exploration stage.
• Detail concept work after reviewing stages and several passes if required.
• Research and provide exploratory sketches for interior and exterior sets based on the approved brief.
• Produce detailed drawings at the correct scale with prop callouts detailing any prop specifications within the set.
• Collaborate with other designers and the Art Director to help elevate the aesthetic and visual development process.
• Provide detailed technical-design sheets, including turnarounds and functionality explanations of the subject matter, and communicate with directors to represent design options.

Requirements

• Must be based in the UK and require the right to work in the UK.
• Good drawing skills, including perspective and understanding of volumes, and a high level of skill in digital mediums (Photoshop).
• Strong understanding of the scope required for a 2D/3D TV show and 3D design and modelling workflow.
• Excellent communication, time management, and prioritisation skills, with the ability to work autonomously and to quick turnarounds.
• Able to take creative direction and constructive feedback from the Director and Art Director, and make necessary changes to the work.
• Excellent aesthetic judgment with strong drawing and painting skills, attention to detail, and understanding of colors, lighting, value structure, volumes, turnarounds, and spatial planning.

Nice to have

• Good skills in graphic design and stylized textures.
• Knowledge of the animation pipeline and process beyond the Art Department.
• Experience using Flow Production Tracking (Shotgrid).
• Passion for storytelling.
