Software Engineer II (AI): Designing and developing distributed software systems that power web experiences for over 700M users with an accent on scalability, performance, and reliability. Location: Redmond, United States. Starting January 26, 2026, employees who live within a 50-mile commute of a designated Microsoft office in the U.S. are expected to work from the office at least four days per week.

Salary: USD $100,600 – $199,000 per year (general U.S. range); USD $131,400 – $215,400 per year (San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area).

What you will do

• Design and develop reliable, scalable, and performant distributed software systems.
• Work closely with other engineers, product managers, and cross-functional partners to deliver impactful features.
• Write high-quality, maintainable, and testable code, and participate in code reviews.
• Identify and resolve production issues, and continuously improve system performance and reliability.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
• Take initiative, think proactively, and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
• 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
• Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements (Microsoft Cloud Background Check required upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter).

Nice to have

• Master’s Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and 3+ years experience OR Bachelor’s and 5+ years experience.
• 2+ years of experience building and shipping scalable cloud solutions in distributed systems.
• 2+ years of experience building and shipping production quality software or services.
• Experience working with Service Fabric or Kubernetes.
• Drive to improve performance, availability, and reliability of services.
• Motivation to increase efficiencies through automation.
• Passion for designing and building large-scale distributed systems.
• Familiarity with building software systems that apply security best practices.
