Software Engineer, Encryption (AI): Designing, building, and scaling novel privacy features and infrastructure across ChatGPT and future consumer devices with an accent on client-side encryption, hardware security modules (HSMs), and trusted execution environments (TEEs). Focus on building core abstractions for encrypted storage, sync, and recovery, integrating with private inference, and operating scalable, reliable, secure systems.

Location: This role may be based in San Francisco, CA or remotely in the US with occasional travel to our HQ. We offer relocation assistance to new employees.

Salary: $292,000–$490,000 + Equity

What you will do

• Ship fast while balancing difficult trade-offs in complex domains.
• Build core abstractions for encrypted storage, sync, and recovery, especially with inference in trusted execution environments.
• Develop product features for authentication, encryption, and storage across ChatGPT and future consumer devices.
• Build and maintain infrastructure for hardware security modules (HSMs).
• Integrate with private inference and computing infrastructure.
• Operate systems at scale with high reliability, including an on-call rotation.

Requirements

• Deep care about user privacy and security.
• 5+ years of experience in professional software engineering.
• Experience designing end-to-end encryption protocols (e.g., Labyrinth).
• Experience building intuitive authentication experiences for users.
• Experience building and scaling HSM infrastructure under strict security requirements (e.g., Juicebox).
• Pride in building and operating scalable, reliable, secure systems.
