Senior Applied Scientist (AI): Building and optimizing leading embedding models for semantic search across Microsoft's Bing index content and next-generation search engines with an accent on AI, LLM, multi-modal, and NLP with deep experience in DL/ML. Focus on leading exploration from idea to production, applying state-of-the-art research innovations, and driving measurable business impact.

Location: Suzhou, China. Employees living within a 25-mile commute of a designated Microsoft office in non-U.S. locations are expected to work from the office at least four days per week starting January 26, 2026.

What you will do

• Apply state-of-the-art research and industry innovations to improve Search/Grounding quality with measurable business impact.
• Drive exploration of big bets from idea to product shipment.
• Collaborate with product, algo, and engineering partners globally.
• Optimize and implement productivity & agility for model training/inference code, data pipelines, and shipping processes.
• Mentor and guide junior team members in technical skills and work methodology.
• Ensure data quality and review designs, experiments, and pipelines.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Computer Science, or related field with 4+ years of experience, or Master's with 3+ years, or Doctorate with 1+ year.
• Prior experience in Research, Applied Science, Search/Recommendation, or deep model training.
• Experience with common machine learning, deep learning frameworks, LLMs, and prompting.
• Solid coding ability for online system maintenance and feature changes.
• Ability to communicate technical details clearly across organizational boundaries required.
• Must work from the office at least four days per week in Suzhou, China, starting January 26, 2026.

Nice to have

• Master's Degree with 6+ years experience, or Doctorate with 3+ years.
• Solid experience and understanding of Deep models and Retrieval.
• Solid research experience and publications.
• Familiarity with model optimization on training/inference and GPU side.
