Staff Backend Engineer

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco or New York City, US. Engineers must be located in the US and spend three days per week in the SF or NY office. hirify.global will support costs for engineers living outside these cities who are required to come into the office.

Salary: $221,000 - $299,000 base salary plus stock options

What you will do

• Act as a multiplier for the engineering team, setting technical direction and designing scalable systems.
• Work closely with engineering and product counterparts in both the US and UK.
• Be hands-on with writing and reviewing code, leading architectural thinking, and making pragmatic technical trade-offs.
• Mentor engineers at all levels, helping them deepen technical judgment and shaping a culture of excellence.
• Help define how to build a differentiated US experience and scale responsibly with product leaders and cross-functional partners.

Requirements

• Strong experience working on the backend of a technology product.
• Product mindset: care about customer outcomes and make data-informed decisions.
• Comfortable working in a team that deals with ambiguity.
• Interested in distributed systems and writing resilient software.
• Some experience with strongly-typed languages (Go, Java, C, Scala etc.).
• Must be based in the US and able to work hybrid from San Francisco or New York City.
