Engineering Manager (AI)

Location: San Francisco, CA; New York City, NY; or Seattle, WA. Hybrid policy: staff must work from one of the offices at least 25% of the time, with some roles requiring more office time.

Annual salary: $500,000–$850,000 USD.

What you will do

• Lead engineering efforts to improve model performance and scale inference and training systems.
• Identify and remove bottlenecks while building robust, durable solutions for compute-intensive systems.
• Maintain enough familiarity with the technical stack to make targeted individual-contributor contributions.
• Manage day-to-day execution, prioritize work, and lead projects in a dynamic environment.
• Coach reports and support their professional growth.
• Maintain a deep understanding of the team’s technical work and its implications for AI safety.

Requirements

• At least 1 year of management experience in a technical environment, particularly performance or distributed systems.
• Background in machine learning, AI, or a related technical field.
• Ability to understand and contribute to discussions on complex technical topics.
• Experience managing teams through rapid growth and change.
• Strong stakeholder relationship-building and communication skills.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education, training, and experience in a relevant field.

Nice to have

• Experience with high-performance, large-scale ML systems.
• GPU or accelerator programming.
• ML framework internals, OS internals, or transformer-based language modeling.
