Principal Systems Engineer (Robotics)

Location: Foster City, California, United States; hybrid workplace

Base salary: $349,000–$419,000 per year, excluding equity, sign-on bonus, and other compensation components.

Zoox is developing a fully autonomous vehicle fleet and the supporting mobility ecosystem for urban robotaxi services.

What you will do

• Define and refine systems engineering strategy and architecture for safety and fail-operational initiatives.
• Lead the development and evolution of metrics measuring the robotaxi’s ability to safely complete customer journeys.
• Review and approve mission assurance clearance documents.
• Present complex metrics, data analyses, and actionable insights to stakeholders and senior executives.
• Coach and mentor systems engineers while leading cross-functional technical programs.

Requirements

• Master’s degree or higher in engineering, computer science, or a related field.
• At least 10 years of relevant experience in systems engineering, data analysis, performance tracking, or risk quantification for complex systems.
• Experience defining, implementing, and managing quantitative metrics and data-driven approaches for complex software or hardware systems.
• Proficiency in statistics and probability.
• Hands-on experience with complex software systems, preferably in robotics, autonomous driving, or aerospace.
• Strong written and in-person communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders, drive consensus, and present complex data to senior audiences.

Nice to have

• Ph.D. in engineering, computer science, or a related field.
• Experience with large, safety-critical systems, automotive systems, autonomous driving, or robotics.
• Familiarity with ISO 26262, ISO 21448, MIL-STD-882, or similar safety standards.
