TL;DR
Principal Mechanical Systems Engineer (Radar): Developing and integrating complex phased-array radar systems across the full engineering lifecycle with an accent on mechanical systems engineering, requirements decomposition, architectural modelling, and system verification. Focus on solving complex system-design problems, managing interfaces and trade-offs, and supporting technical authority activities through customer acceptance.

Location: Isle of Wight, England, United Kingdom

Salary: £81.05 per hour

Company

Work on aerospace and defence radar-system development through a contract engagement.

What you will do

  • Develop mechanical and systems-engineering solutions for complex phased-array radar systems across the lifecycle from requirements definition through integration, customer acceptance, support and disposal.
  • Analyse modelled and real-world performance data, conduct design trade-offs, and develop system or subsystem designs against functional and performance goals.
  • Decompose requirements to system and subsystem level, manage them in tools such as IBM DOORS Next, and produce associated specifications.
  • Define system architectures and internal and external interfaces using tools such as CATIA Magic/Cameo or Enterprise Architect.
  • Direct system integration, test planning, verification and validation, and prepare customer-acceptance evidence.
  • Lead technical reviews, support the Radar Product System Design Authority, provide technical guidance, and review engineering documentation for compliance.

Requirements

  • Expert knowledge and experience in Mechanical and Systems Engineering, systems thinking, and holistic approaches to complex problems.
  • Strong knowledge of Systems Engineering standards, including ISO 15288 and ISO 24641.
  • Experience with requirements management, such as IBM DOORS Next, and configuration management.
  • Experience leading large-scale, complex system designs and working across the full engineering lifecycle, including Waterfall or Agile models and tools such as JIRA.
  • Experience presenting technical and non-technical information in formal settings and a good level of IT literacy.
  • Chartered Engineer status or final-stage progression toward it, or equivalent capability, with progress toward relevant accreditation such as INCOSE UK CSEP.
  • Higher education or equivalent experience in a relevant Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics discipline.

Nice to have

  • Understanding of mechanical engineering and systems-engineering topics such as signal processing or target-track extraction.
  • Experience with radio, satellite, radar or sonar systems and the factors affecting sensing-system performance, measurement accuracy and timeliness.
  • Experience with UAF, NAF, TOGAF, SysML or UML and contemporary concepts such as MBE, MBSE, digital twins, autonomous systems, AR/VR, AI/ML or IoT.
  • Experience with MATLAB, Simulink, Perl, Python or MathCAD for mathematical simulation.
  • Knowledge of the defence industry, geopolitical influences and current UK government strategy.

Culture & Benefits

  • Contract engagement supporting aerospace and defence product development.
  • Technical authority and engineering-governance responsibilities may be included.
  • Work involves collaboration with stakeholders, customers and engineering teams across system and subsystem activities.

Hiring process

  • Applications are submitted through the provided Morson application route.
