Senior Scientist, DSCS Digital Technologies–Laboratory Automation, Automation Systems Engineer (Laboratory Automation)

Location: Hybrid role based in Rahway, New Jersey, United States; US and Puerto Rico residents only. Domestic relocation is listed, and travel requirements are 10%.

Salary: $117,000–$184,200 annually, plus eligibility for annual bonus and long-term incentive where applicable.

What you will do

• Design automation systems integrating robotics, laboratory instrumentation, and software.
• Translate researchers’ experimental needs into scalable automated workflows.
• Integrate robotic platforms with laboratory equipment and data systems for end-to-end digital workflows.
• Lead automation projects from concept through deployment across cross-functional stakeholders.
• Improve existing automation platforms for performance, usability, and reliability.
• Provide hands-on troubleshooting, support, and training for scientists using the systems.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in engineering, robotics, mechatronics, chemistry, physics, biology, pharmaceutical sciences, or a closely related field, with expected graduation no later than December 2026; or an M.S. in a related field plus at least 2 years of relevant experience; or a B.S. in a related field plus at least 4 years of relevant experience.
• Experience in a laboratory setting with laboratory automation and equipment integration.
• Experience with scripting or programming using accepted best practices, including version control, design patterns, and clean code.
• Understanding of biopharmaceutical process research and development, drug product development, and/or analytical development.
• Ability to work independently and entrepreneurially on cross-functional teams.
• Effective scientific collaboration and communication skills, including the ability to work with technicians and vendors.

Nice to have

• Programming experience with Python, C#, VBA, JavaScript, or R.
• Experience with automation edge devices and controllers, including PLCs and microcontrollers.
• Experience with industrial SCADA or orchestration software such as DeltaV, Ignition, or WinCC OA.
• Experience with benchtop automated reactor systems such as Sartorius Ambr250.
• Experience integrating laboratory automation software, firmware, hardware, instruments, and custom or commercial software into end-to-end solutions.
• Experience designing, prototyping, and deploying laboratory automation technologies.
• Understanding of data science and AI/ML concepts applied to laboratory automation.
• Wet-lab experience in biopharmaceutical drug substance, drug product, or analytical research and development.
• Experience with laboratory notebook software such as Benchling or Signals.
• Scientific curiosity, willingness to learn, and a strong interest in understanding how systems work.
