Senior Engineer (Fabrication and Machining)

Location: On-site at the Nevada National Security Site near Mercury, Nevada, United States. The schedule is 4/10s, Monday through Thursday, subject to change.

Annual salary: $101,524.80–$152,297.60.

What you will do

• Serve as the Data and Diagnostics Group engineering subject matter expert and provide technical guidance to engineers, scientists, and management.
• Oversee technical facilities, machine shop operations, manufacturing systems, and fabrication support for experimental and operational systems.
• Operate mills, lathes, EDM, and 3D printing equipment to produce precision components and troubleshoot custom hardware.
• Design custom components in SolidWorks and translate experimental requirements into build-ready hardware.
• Develop field programs and select and implement instrumentation and diagnostic systems.
• Conduct research, data analysis, procurement definition, subcontract support, proposal scoping, and vendor collaboration while ensuring compliance with engineering and safety standards.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in an ABET-accredited engineering program for Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering; a calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering; or a Professional Engineer license.
• At least 5 years of relevant experience, with skill-building experience demonstrating deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research experience may be recognized.
• Subject matter expertise in fabrication and machining for research or operational applications.
• Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks or equivalent CAD software.
• Expert-level knowledge of precision machining using mills, lathes, and EDM, as well as additive manufacturing using 3D printing.
• Experience developing field programs, selecting and implementing instrumentation systems, and supporting proposals or subcontract preparation and evaluation.
• Ability to provide technical guidance, collaborate with diverse scientists and engineers, make independent decisions, prioritize multiple activities, and meet deadlines.
• Knowledge of applicable engineering codes, standards, safety requirements, laws, orders, and MSTS policies and procedures.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship and being at least 18 years old. A federal background investigation, drug testing, reinvestigations, and potentially a counterintelligence evaluation may be required.
• Valid driver’s license required. A pre-placement physical examination, drug screen, and random drug testing apply.
