TL;DR
Data Center Design Engineer (AI): Designing and delivering electrical, mechanical, power, cooling, and high-density liquid-cooled GPU infrastructure for new data centers, expansions, and upgrades with an accent on end-to-end execution, resilient distribution systems, and commissioning. Focus on defining utility-to-rack architectures, integrating direct-to-chip cooling dependencies, leading technical acceptance and staged commissioning, and managing complex external delivery partners.

Location: Hybrid; Austin, Texas, United States. Travel up to 25% is required, and offer-stage candidates may be asked to attend an in-person interview at a hirify.global office or hub.

Company

hirify.global operates a global network and infrastructure platform that protects and accelerates Internet applications for customers ranging from individual websites to Fortune 500 companies.

What you will do

  • Translate capacity requirements into white-space designs, rack plans, cabling, fiber, cross-connects, conveyance, and supporting data center infrastructure.
  • Lead electrical design and end-to-end delivery for new sites, expansions, and infrastructure upgrades from site qualification and basis of design through energization, commissioning, and operational handover.
  • Design and review utility-to-rack systems, including transformers, switchgear, generators, UPS systems, transfer systems, busway, feeders, rack PDUs, grounding, metering, and power distribution architectures.
  • Define electrical interfaces for direct-to-chip liquid cooling, including CDUs, pumps, controls, leak detection, facility water systems, and heat-rejection equipment.
  • Coordinate internal teams and external data center partners, review designs and RFPs, resolve technical risks, and govern delivery and acceptance.
  • Oversee staged commissioning, integrated systems testing, failure-mode testing, deficiency closure, turnover documentation, EPMS, telemetry, and capacity tracking.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience plus 5+ years in data center mechanical and electrical design and operations, deployment, or installation.
  • Experience with HVAC, chilled and condenser water systems, pump controls, glycols, AHUs, CRAH systems, raised floors, hot/cold aisle containment, and building management systems.
  • Understanding of electrical theory, circuit design and analysis, single- and three-phase systems, M&E infrastructure, UPS topologies, cooling methodologies, and resilient data center design and Uptime Institute Tier classifications.
  • Expertise in medium- and low-voltage distribution, transformers, generators, UPS systems, switchgear, transfer systems, busway, grounding, protection, and rack-level power architectures for high-density deployments.
  • Understanding of network hardware architecture, data center switching and routing infrastructure, and optical line/transceiver power and thermal profiles.
  • Experience acting as an owner’s technical representative, governing external partners, reviewing third-party designs, resolving technical disputes, and driving risks and noncompliance to documented closure.
  • Understanding of direct-to-chip liquid cooling and the electrical dependencies of CDUs, pumps, controls, facility water systems, and heat-rejection equipment.
  • Experience with construction administration, equipment testing, energization planning, staged commissioning, integrated systems testing, deficiency management, failure-mode testing, utility coordination, design-deviation governance, power-quality or incident investigations, and lifecycle management of mission-critical electrical infrastructure.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills; experience working across multiple time zones and cross-functional teams on time-sensitive projects under pressure.

Nice to have

  • P.E. certification or equivalent; a degree in electrical, mechanical engineering, or IT.
  • Large-scale mission-critical facility design, construction, commissioning, or operations experience.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 70/NEC, IEEE, NEMA, ANSI, UMC, ASHRAE, UBC, LEED, and Uptime Institute standards.
  • Programming, scripting, or automation experience with Python, Go, or Bash; JIRA or Confluence administration; AutoCAD.
  • FLOTHERM, Tileflow, ETAP, SKM PowerTools, EasyPower, or equivalent power and thermal modeling tools.
  • Experience with hardware validation, power/cooling capacity modeling, EPMS/BMS integration, branch-circuit monitoring, rack telemetry, metering, capacity forecasting, or automated infrastructure reporting.
  • Experience with NVIDIA DGX, GB200/GB300 NVL, OCP Open Rack, comparable liquid-cooled GPU platforms, or AI factory reference architectures.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work within hirify.global’s global Infrastructure team, supporting a worldwide data center and Point of Presence footprint.
  • Collaborate with capacity planning, network strategy, security, hardware sourcing, SRE, infrastructure teams, vendors, utilities, contractors, and commissioning agents.
  • The role emphasizes high ownership, rapid execution, iterative improvement, and managing many concurrent projects with minimal oversight.
  • hirify.global supports a mission focused on protecting and improving the open Internet and provides reasonable accommodations for qualified applicants.

Hiring process

  • Applicants who reach the offer stage may be asked to attend an in-person interview at a hirify.global office or hub.
  • Employment may be conditioned on authorization to receive technology controlled under U.S. export laws without sponsorship for an export license.
