Principal Systems Engineer - Product Development

Location: Farnborough, United Kingdom. Candidates must hold sole British nationality and hold or be eligible to obtain UK Developed Vetting (DV) Clearance.

What you will do

• Define product features, system behavior, end-to-end architectures, and interdisciplinary design trade-offs for advanced security devices.
• Lead the elicitation, structuring, and management of technical requirements across engineering disciplines using tools such as IBM DOORS.
• Guide electronics, FPGA, software, and mechanical engineers through the product lifecycle while identifying risks, investigating root causes, and driving resolution.
• Oversee product verification, validation, environmental qualification, and delivery from concept through customer acceptance.
• Produce engineering estimates for competitive bids and support technical proposals.
• Work directly with defence customers to clarify or modify requirements and ensure the product meets the intended need.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience developing physical electronic/software products in the defence, aerospace, or space sectors.
• Degree-level qualification in Engineering, Electronic Design, Computer Science, Physics, or a relevant technical field.
• Track record of delivering complex technical solutions across the systems engineering lifecycle, including requirements management, system design, architecture, and verification.
• Strong system-level thinking and ability to collaborate with hardware, software, FPGA, and mechanical specialists.
• Strong technical documentation skills and confidence negotiating technical requirements directly with customers.
• Sole British nationality is required for UK eyes-only projects.
• Must hold or be eligible to obtain UK Developed Vetting (DV) Clearance.

Nice to have

• Ability to handle complexity, uncertainty, and competing programme demands.
• Demonstrable problem-solving skills and application of system-level thinking.
• Experience with SysML, UML, use case analysis, and trade studies.
• Experience with defence standards such as DEF STAN and MIL-STD for environmental and EMC testing.
• Experience estimating engineering hours and writing technical proposals for bids.
• Familiarity with the NCSC CAPS assurance process.
