TL;DR
Mechatronics Engineer (Autonomous Systems): Developing, integrating, and validating hardware and software subsystems for autonomous air, land, and sea platforms with an accent on mechatronic design, embedded integration, testing, and safety-critical engineering. Focus on solving complex mechanical-electrical-software interface problems, conducting vehicle trials, maintaining traceable verification evidence, and supporting reliable field-ready products.
Location: Fareham, SouthEast PO16, United Kingdom
Company
hirify.global develops autonomous systems across air, land, and sea, with advanced engineering in New Zealand and manufacturing scale-up and delivery in the United Kingdom.
What you will do
Design and integrate mechatronic subsystems combining mechanical components, electronics, actuators, sensors, and control systems.
Select and integrate motors, servos, drivetrains, mechanisms, and sensors for propulsion, control surfaces, and payload systems.
Integrate hardware, embedded software, and mechanical assemblies, resolving interface issues from concept through functional subsystem.
Build, commission, debug, and test assemblies, including test rigs, bench testing, endurance testing, performance characterisation, ground testing, and field trials.
Define subsystem requirements, conduct verification activities, analyse test data, and maintain traceable design and test documentation.
Support safety-critical engineering, configuration management, regulatory compliance, and cross-functional resolution of complex challenges with embedded software, systems, propulsion, and GNC engineers.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Mechatronics, Aerospace, Electrical, Software, Computer Systems Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
At least five years of relevant engineering experience, ideally in aerospace, robotics, defence, autonomous systems, or a similarly technically demanding environment.
Strong practical experience with mechatronics and embedded systems, including the interaction between mechanical, electrical, and software components.
Understanding of hardware/software integration, system-level testing, verification, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis across mechanical and electrical interfaces.
Experience developing, integrating, or supporting autonomous vehicle or autopilot systems.
Familiarity with autonomous systems technologies and frameworks such as PX4, ArduPilot, ROS 2, MAVLink, or ArduPilot Lua scripting.
Ability to translate engineering requirements into practical designs, test activities, and documented verification evidence.
Strong technical documentation and communication skills, including explaining complex technical concepts and compliance requirements to engineering and production teams.
Collaborative approach and interest in supporting junior engineers and strengthening wider team capability.
Nice to have
PCB design experience using Altium Designer, KiCad, or similar tools, plus circuit simulation with LTspice.
Embedded C development, particularly with AVR or STM32 microcontrollers.
Experience with Ethernet, CAN, CAN-FD, SPI, I²C, or Qt for autonomous vehicle command-and-control systems.
Knowledge of civil aviation software assurance standards, including RTCA DO-178C / EUROCAE ED-12C and DAL A or B.
Familiarity with FAA, EASA, UK CAA, NATO STANAG, MAA, Def Stan 00-56, or related defence and safety requirements.
Experience with a formal Design Management System or Design Organisation framework.
Culture & Benefits
Full-time, permanent employment in the Manufacturing & Production team.
Collaborative, low-ego environment focused on open communication, knowledge sharing, ownership, and practical problem-solving.
Opportunity to work with multidisciplinary engineering teams across countries and contribute to autonomous technology used by customers worldwide.
Focus on safety, quality, technical growth, and career pathways across global teams, projects, and locations.
