Energetics Tool Engineer (Level V) (Aerospace Propulsion)

Location: Onsite or hybrid in Folsom, CA, or Reno, NV, United States; travel up to 15% within the U.S. and ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD security clearance required. U.S. citizenship required; active Secret clearance preferred.

Base salary: $157,000–$218,300 USD annually, depending on experience, skills, and location.

What you will do

• Manage tooling projects from concept and design through fabrication, inspection, procurement, verification, and supplier support.
• Define tooling and equipment with manufacturing teams and internal customers while meeting cost, schedule, quality, safety, and environmental requirements.
• Create and maintain CAD models, drawings, specifications, work instructions, and configuration documentation.
• Apply DFM/DFA, GD&T, value engineering, metrology, tolerance analysis, and stress analysis to tooling designs.
• Support manufacturing operations, process engineering, continuous improvement, and tooling use in production.
• Help implement PDM/PLM, MES, EAM/CMMS, and standardized tooling practices; mentor junior designers and peers.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related discipline from an accredited university; equivalent experience may be considered.
• 10–15 years of tool design or engineering experience, including emphasis on solid rocket motor live operations.
• Working knowledge of casting, curing, and cutting operations for solid propellant processing.
• Experience designing tools for cast cores, cast distribution, cast-core stripping, attended and remote propellant cutting/trimming, propellant-environment fixtures and stands, and loaded-motor lifting, handling, and transport.
• Proficiency with mechanical CAD software such as SolidWorks, NX, or similar.
• Strong working knowledge of GD&T under ASME Y14.5 and metrology principles.
• Experience with finite element analysis, tooling materials selection, machining processes, tolerance analysis, configuration management, and change control.
• Ability to design and validate precision fixtures, jigs, and gauges for assembly and inspection.
• Previous use of MES or EAM/CMMS systems for tool fabrication and maintenance.
• Ability to lift, move, or carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Nice to have

• Experience supporting Missile Defense Agency programs.
• Experience designing tooling for solid rocket motor cases, nozzles, or divert/attitude control systems.
• Experience designing tools for automation.
• Active Secret security clearance.
