TL;DR
2027 Summer Intern - Research & Development - Energy and Propulsion Controls (Automotive Energy and Propulsion Controls): Developing and evaluating vehicle-level control concepts, models, simulations, and implementations for electrified propulsion and thermal-management systems with an accent on batteries, power electronics, electric machines, charging, HVAC-related systems, and thermal actuators. Focus on analyzing drive-cycle and test data, validating control strategies, coordinating vehicle subsystems, and balancing efficiency, range, temperature, charging performance, propulsion capability, and occupant comfort.

Location: Hybrid; report to Warren, Michigan at least three times per week. The internship starts on May 24 or June 14, 2027.

Company

hirify.global develops automotive technologies focused on zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion.

What you will do

  • Support research in energy management, propulsion controls, thermal management, and vehicle-level control coordination.
  • Develop, evaluate, and document control strategies for batteries, power electronics, electric machines, drive units, charging systems, and thermal systems.
  • Develop or modify models and run simulations across drive cycles, ambient and charging conditions, operating modes, and component limits.
  • Support thermal-management implementation, including control logic for pumps, valves, compressors, heaters, fans, shutters, and other actuators.
  • Analyze sensor, actuator, simulation, laboratory, hardware-in-the-loop, and vehicle-test data; investigate issues and evaluate tradeoffs.
  • Support verification and validation, requirements and test documentation, technical reporting, stakeholder reviews, and recommendations for follow-on work.

Requirements

  • Pursuing an MS or PhD in electrical, mechanical, controls, computer, chemical, systems, aerospace engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Available to work full-time, 40 hours per week during the summer months.
  • Willing to work in a laboratory, engineering test, or vehicle-development environment as applicable to the assignment.
  • GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship; applicants requiring GM sponsorship now or in the future, including H-1B, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, TN, or J-1 support, should not apply.

Nice to have

  • Coursework, research, or project experience in control systems, thermal systems, energy management, vehicle dynamics, battery systems, power electronics, electric propulsion, or mechatronics.
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink, Python, Modelica, GT-SUITE, or comparable modeling and simulation tools.
  • Familiarity with feedback control, system identification, optimization, state estimation, calibration, and control-oriented modeling.
  • Experience analyzing time-series data from simulations, laboratory, hardware-in-the-loop, or vehicle testing.
  • Experience with sensors, actuators, data acquisition, embedded controls, or software development.
  • Knowledge of battery state of charge, battery power limits, thermal limits, energy consumption, regenerative braking, propulsion operating modes, CAN, LIN, signal databases, or vehicle data logging.
  • Ability to organize technical work, document assumptions, investigate unexpected results, and communicate conclusions clearly; strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.

Culture & Benefits

  • Multidisciplinary collaboration with controls researchers, thermal engineers, propulsion specialists, modeling and simulation experts, and vehicle-development teams.
  • Work applies systems engineering, controls theory, experimentation, simulation, and data analysis to vehicle research.
  • Eligible students receive a one-time lump-sum taxable stipend to help facilitate relocation benefits.
  • hirify.global provides employee rewards and benefits resources and promotes an inclusive workplace.

Hiring process

  • Applicants may be required to complete role-related assessments and pre-employment screening before beginning employment.
  • Applicants requesting an accommodation should contact GM Careers Accommodations and include the requested accommodation, job title, and requisition number.
