2027 Summer Intern - Research and Development - Energy and Propulsion Systems Architecture (Electric Vehicles)

Location: Hybrid, Warren, Michigan, United States; required to report to the Michigan office at least three times per week.

What you will do

• Support energy and propulsion systems architecture studies covering batteries, electric machines, drive units, power electronics, controls, and thermal systems.
• Develop, run, and interpret vehicle-level propulsion and energy simulations across operating conditions and drive cycles.
• Analyze energy consumption, performance, power capability, operating limits, state of charge, and architecture tradeoffs.
• Support cell, module, and battery-pack testing, including test preparation, equipment configuration, data collection, and recordkeeping.
• Compare experimental results with model predictions and improve model assumptions, inputs, or analysis methods.
• Process, visualize, and communicate test and simulation data through plots, tables, documentation, diagrams, requirements, scripts, test summaries, and presentations.

Requirements

• Pursuing an advanced degree (MS or PhD) in mechanical, electrical, chemical, materials science and engineering, automotive, aerospace, systems engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• Able to work full-time, 40 hours per week during the summer months.
• Willing to work in a laboratory and engineering test environment.
• GM immigration sponsorship is not available now or in the future, including H-1B, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, TN, J-1, company sponsorship, or other immigration support.

Nice to have

• Coursework, research, or project experience in battery systems, electrochemistry, energy storage, electric propulsion, power electronics, controls, thermal systems, vehicle dynamics, or systems engineering.
• Experience with engineering modeling, simulation, or data analysis using MATLAB/Simulink, Python, Excel, or comparable tools.
• Experience processing time-series data and communicating technical results through plots, reports, or presentations.
• Laboratory, testing, or instrumentation experience, including experimental design, measurement quality, and safe work practices.
• Ability to organize technical work, manage multiple priorities, collaborate cross-functionally, communicate clearly, and learn from successful and unsuccessful experiments.
