AI Product Counsel

Location: San Francisco or Washington, D.C.; hybrid schedule with three days in the office per week. Remote candidates will also be considered, with relocation assistance available to eligible new employees.

Salary: $330,000–$366,000 base pay annually, plus equity and potential performance-related bonuses.

What you will do

• Advise teams developing frontier AI models and products, including ChatGPT, Codex, consumer and workplace offerings, and regulated industry applications.
• Identify and mitigate product, regulatory, copyright, commerce, privacy, and other legal risks.
• Develop creative legal strategies and scalable processes for flexible risk-management solutions.
• Serve as an AI legal subject-matter expert and help propose and advance AI legal policy positions.
• Partner cross-functionally with product teams across OpenAI to support responsible product development.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience, including a mix of in-house or technology-focused law firm roles.
• JD and a license or qualification to practice in California.
• Strong understanding of legal requirements with a practical and principled approach to problem-solving.
• Ability to build cross-functional relationships and communicate effectively while balancing risk-taking with responsible development.
• Strong ownership, inquisitiveness, enthusiasm for technology, sound judgment, and comfort working through ambiguity.
