TL;DR
Senior Embedded Software Engineer (Automotive): Building and testing production firmware for safety-critical autonomous transit vehicles with an accent on RTOS applications, communication architectures, and low-level hardware integration. Focus on designing reliable embedded systems, bringing up new boards and SoCs, building automated test frameworks, and optimizing software for resource-constrained platforms.
Location: United States, Remote
Company
hirify.global is developing a carbon-neutral public transit system based on standardized autonomous vehicles operating on dedicated roadways.
What you will do
Design, prototype, build, and test production firmware for safety-critical vehicle systems.
Develop and optimize applications in RTOS environments for reliability, latency, throughput, memory footprint, and power consumption.
Own communication architecture between MCUs, sensors, and main compute using standard and custom protocols.
Lead board and SoC bring-up, including bootloaders, drivers, and low-level diagnostics, from prototype through production.
Build automated unit, integration, and system testing frameworks with test and platform engineers.
Mentor embedded engineers, conduct code reviews, and establish engineering standards and best practices.
Requirements
Expert-level C and/or C++ for embedded systems.
Strong command of low-level and higher-level communication protocols, including SPI, UART, I2C, CAN, and TCP/UDP.
Experience developing in RTOS environments such as PX5, embedded Linux with pthreads, QNX, VxWorks, or RTEMS.
Experience with MCU bootloaders, device drivers, and new board or SoC bring-up.
Experience deploying firmware to multi-device systems or vehicles in a power-safe, fault-tolerant manner.
Demonstrated software speed and size optimization for resource-constrained platforms.
Understanding of the embedded software development life cycle, including version control, code review, CI, and automated testing.
Typically 7+ years developing embedded software for production systems, including substantial work on safety-critical or highly reliable platforms such as automotive, aerospace, medical, industrial, or robotics systems.
Nice to have
Experience with safety-critical systems and processes such as ISO 26262.
Experience in automotive or transit domains.
Experience with automotive-grade safety MCUs, ideally NXP S32K3 or comparable lockstep/ASIL-rated parts such as Infineon AURIX or TI TMS570.
Familiarity with kernel internals and low-level OS concepts.
Experience with deterministic timing and networking, including NTP, PTP, or TSN.
Experience with CAN tooling and DBC-based workflows.
Comfort using electronics test equipment and hardware debugging tools.
Scripting experience, such as Python, for test automation and tooling.
Culture & Benefits
Work on firmware for autonomous transit vehicles where reliability is a safety requirement and the software contributes to the safety case.
Collaborate with electrical, software, test, and platform engineers across vehicle subsystems.
Work hands-on with sensor kits, custom boards, main compute platforms, and new hardware.
