Lecturer in Classical Studies (Classical Studies)

Location: Hybrid working aligned to the Milton Keynes office, with office attendance expected approximately once per month. Interviews take place on campus, with alternative arrangements available for candidates unable to attend in person.

Salary: £47,389–£56,535 per year.

What you will do

• Develop, plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate Classical Studies curriculum individually and collaboratively.
• Prepare distance-learning materials and assessments designed for the needs of distance learners.
• Present Open University modules, including setting assessments and examinations, monitoring marking, participating in examination boards and forums, and delivering occasional evening or weekend learning events.
• Conduct high-quality Classical Studies research and contribute to the department’s research culture and profile.
• Connect research with teaching, public engagement, outreach, impact and knowledge exchange.
• Undertake academic leadership, administration and related School, Faculty and University responsibilities.

Requirements

• Completed PhD in Classical Studies or a related subject at the point of application; a submitted thesis pending amendments is not sufficient.
• Published research appropriate to career stage, detailed plans for future research, and potential to produce work of international or world-leading quality.
• Proven ability to teach Latin literature and/or Roman social or cultural history, plus beginners’ Latin.
• Broad undergraduate teaching experience and ability to teach beyond the immediate area of specialisation.
• Interdisciplinary approach to teaching and/or research, with willingness to work across genre and subject boundaries.
• Ability and readiness to develop, research and write distance-learning materials and provide academic input and leadership for established Open University modules.
• Ability to work efficiently and meet deadlines independently and collaboratively.
• Interest in pedagogical techniques for teaching Classical Studies in higher education.
• Willingness to work in line with the ideals of hirify.global.

Nice to have

• Research expertise in Latin literature and/or Roman social or cultural history.
• Higher Education teaching qualification such as PGCert or FHEA.
• Experience teaching Classical Studies at postgraduate level.
• Additional research activity appropriate to career stage, including research impact activities or funding bids.
• Ability to raise the profile of Classical Studies through outreach or public-impact activities.
