TL;DR
Senior Motion Control Systems Engineer (Nuclear): Designing and integrating motion-control, mechanical-handling, and motor-driven equipment for advanced nuclear power plants with an accent on electrical design, control software, safety functions, and lifecycle verification. Focus on developing PLC and motion-controller systems, resolving complex integration and reliability issues, and leading testing, commissioning, and technical reviews.

Location: Onsite in Alameda, CA; Albuquerque, NM; or Oak Ridge, TN. Some travel may be required, up to 10%.

Salary: $140,611–$165,425 per year for employees working onsite at the Alameda, CA headquarters.

Company

hirify.global develops fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor technology to support the transition to clean energy.

What you will do

  • Own and lead the design of motion-control, electrical-control, motor-drive, and mechanical-handling systems for an advanced nuclear power plant.
  • Specify and integrate motors, drives, instrumentation, safety devices, control panels, PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, industrial networks, and plant-control interfaces.
  • Define operating modes, sequencing, alarms, interlocks, permissives, trips, fault responses, safe states, and operator interfaces.
  • Develop and maintain requirements, specifications, schematics, calculations, interface documents, test procedures, verification records, and configuration-controlled software documentation.
  • Support supplier evaluations, design reviews, inspections, FAT, SAT, load testing, commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, corrective actions, and lifecycle maintenance.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring while coordinating interfaces across process, mechanical, electrical, nuclear, operations, cybersecurity, quality, and commissioning disciplines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline.
  • At least 4 years of progressively responsible experience in control-systems engineering, industrial automation, instrumentation and controls, or a related field, including IEC 61131-3 control-logic development or equivalent standards.
  • Experience serving as a responsible engineer, system owner, technical lead, or lead designer for complex electrical, controls, or mechanical-handling equipment.
  • Experience with cranes, hoists, manipulators, lifts, conveyors, positioning systems, remotely operated equipment, robotics, or similar motion-control applications.
  • Experience with system requirements, design documentation, supplier coordination, technical reviews, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and design-change implementation.
  • Knowledge of motion-control architectures, including AC and servo motors, VFDs, drives, gearboxes, brakes, encoders, resolvers, sensors, load cells, and related instrumentation.
  • Experience programming PLCs and motion controllers using ladder logic, structured text, function blocks, sequential-function charts, or equivalent methods.
  • Experience with industrial-control platforms, DCS, HMI, SCADA, remote I/O, control panels, historians, supervisory controls, and industrial communications.
  • Familiarity with industrial protocols, machine safety, low-voltage electrical design, configuration management, requirements traceability, software quality, verification, and lifecycle documentation.
  • Ability to manage complex technical assignments independently, resolve multidisciplinary interfaces, evaluate risks and tradeoffs, communicate technical information clearly, and maintain a strong commitment to safety, quality, and engineering rigor.

Nice to have

  • Professional Engineer license or eligibility for licensure.
  • Experience in nuclear power, advanced reactors, radiological facilities, power generation, utilities, heavy industry, manufacturing, process plants, or EPC.
  • Additional certifications such as NETA or CMCP.

Culture & Benefits

  • Full-time employment with medical, dental, and vision benefits for employees and dependents.
  • Paid vacation, 401(k), pre-tax health insurance, dependent-care, and commuter benefits through FSA programs.
  • Work is performed in office, noisy, manufacturing, and industrial environments; required PPE includes protective footwear and other protective equipment as applicable.
  • Occasional schedule flexibility and rare extended hours may be required for launches and critical project timelines.
  • Employment is subject to equal-opportunity, E-Verify, and Department of Energy Part 810 export-control requirements for facility access.

Hiring process

  • Applicants must be candidates rather than recruiters or agencies.
  • Applicants must answer questions determining whether a Department of Energy export-control license may be required to access Part 810-controlled information.
