Data Science Tech Lead Manager (AI)

Location: New York City, NY; San Francisco, CA; Seattle, WA. Hybrid policy: staff are expected to work from one of the offices at least 25% of the time, and some roles may require more office time.

Annual salary: $380,000–$460,000 USD.

What you will do

• Partner with product, engineering, and research leaders on model roadmap priorities, launch decisions, and major strategic bets.
• Set the Data Science agenda for Model Experience and determine where the team can have the greatest impact on model development and launches.
• Hire, manage, and develop data scientists while setting team direction and raising the standard for data-informed decision-making.
• Define success metrics and measurement frameworks across external products and internal testing, including experimentation and causal inference practices.
• Frame ambiguous questions about model quality and user experience, lead high-stakes analyses, and turn complex model and user behavior findings into recommendations.
• Establish data practices and analytics infrastructure that support rapid iteration as models and products evolve.

Requirements

• Extensive data science experience, including leading analytics for a product or research area at significant scale.
• At least 3 years of experience managing data science teams, including setting direction, hiring, and developing senior data scientists.
• Experience acting as a trusted partner to senior product, research, and business leaders, with examples of changing a roadmap or high-stakes decision.
• Strong product sense and business judgment, including framing the right questions and taking positions with incomplete information.
• Deep expertise in experimental design, causal inference, and statistical modeling at high scale, with working fluency in Python and SQL.
• Clear written and presentation communication skills, including communication with executive audiences.
• Ability to act with urgency and create clarity in ambiguous, fast-moving environments.
• Commitment to building helpful, honest, and harmless AI.
• Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience in a field relevant to the role, demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Nice to have

• Experience with AI/ML products, large language models, or developer tools in the AI/ML ecosystem.
• Experience as a tech lead manager or player-coach balancing hands-on technical work with people management.
• Experience building or scaling a data science team in a fast-growing organization.
• Experience working closely with Product or Research teams, especially on LLM or AI products.
• Comfort working with unstructured data.
