Intern - Plasma Physics (AI)

Location: On-site in Devens, Massachusetts, United States. Interns are responsible for their own transportation and housing. The role requires authorization to work in the United States for any employer.

Salary: $25–$38 per hour. BS interns: $25–$32 per hour; MS/PhD interns: $35–$38 per hour.

What you will do

• Perform plasma physics calculations for SPARC and/or ARC using computational models or experimental datasets.
• Develop computational modules for the SPARC digital twin, including physics and engineering models.
• Develop AI workflows and surrogate models to accelerate complex physics calculations.
• Develop data visualization methods for complex plasma physics data inside the digital twin.
• Select and complete 1–2 projects from available project options during the 13–18 week internship.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing an engineering degree focused on plasma physics or a related field such as engineering or computer science; applicants may be enrolled at the bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD level.
• Introductory knowledge of plasma physics, specifically tokamaks and magnetic confinement fusion.
• Knowledge of using agentic AI tools such as Claude or ChatGPT for coding and scientific research.
• Experience with Python, C++, or similar programming languages.
• Experience with Git or similar version-control systems.
• Excellent writing and technical communication skills.
• Willingness to travel or work occasional required nights, weekends, or on-call shifts.
• Ability to type, stand, or sit for extended periods.
• Dedication to safety when working around potential industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics.
• Compliance with U.S. laws concerning export-controlled or protected technologies and information is required.
