Reporter

Location: Remote; candidates must reside in the Lowell, Massachusetts area, United States. The role includes regional travel, in-person training sessions or meetings, occasional driving, and shift work outside normal business hours.

Hourly wage: $15.00–$19.00, plus a cell phone stipend.

The Lowell Sun, a subsidiary of hirify.global, is a daily newspaper covering local news, sports, and events across the Greater Lowell area and reaching a daily audience of more than 40,000 readers.

What you will do

• Attend news events and report on breaking news, public safety, local government, human interest features, analysis, and enterprise stories.
• Gather, write, edit, and publish breaking news and other stories to the web by daily deadlines.
• Develop sources and relationships with contacts, community members, and press representatives across the coverage area.
• Create multimedia content through social media, video, photography, and smartphone-based reporting.
• Attend local events, press conferences, and meetings, traveling throughout the region as required.
• Work autonomously while collaborating with other journalists and maintaining an unbiased approach to the news beat.

Requirements

• Knowledge of news and enthusiasm for reporting on local government and politics.
• Strong command of the English language, including excellent grammar for writing and editing.
• Proficiency with PCs, social media platforms, and smartphones.
• Strong time management skills and the ability to meet daily deadlines.
• Experience in news reporting, news writing, video recording, photography, and social media.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, willingness to travel for assignments, and willingness to pass a full pre-employment background check and MVR.
• Availability for shift work and coverage outside normal business hours.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with WordPress.
• Prior experience at a daily, weekly, or community newspaper.
• College degree or coursework in journalism, communication, or a related field.
