Field Technician III - Pub Sec (Telecommunications)

Location: Wichita, Kansas, USA; onsite field work with outdoor duties at buried-cable, construction, and field facilities sites. Work may occur in all weather conditions, noise levels, hazardous conditions, and on varied outdoor surfaces. On-call 24x7 rotational coverage, standby, call-outs, dispatch, and overtime are required.

Base salary: $64,668–$86,190 annually in Kansas.

What you will do

• Troubleshoot, isolate, replace, and restore defective network equipment and proactively identify network risks.
• Install, modify, decommission, and test transport, Ethernet, SONET, IP, and customer-premises equipment and services.
• Perform outside plant work, including fiber quality testing, results analysis, underground facility locating, marking, and protection.
• Install and maintain DC power systems, perform limited AC power work, and conduct preventive maintenance on HVAC, high-voltage electrical systems, and DC power plants.
• Manage large network-build projects, vendor coordination, purchase orders, asset management, material replenishment, shipping, receiving, tools, and test equipment.
• Work independently with minimal supervision, support other personnel, lead teams when needed, and make decisions across complex assignments.

Requirements

• 5+ years of technician experience in a telecommunications or data-center environment.
• Master knowledge of standard telecommunications practices and technologies, including Transmission (DSO, POTS, DDS, FT1, DS1, E1, DS3, SONET/SDH), Switching (SS7, trunking, signaling), and TCP/IP, including Fast/Gigabit Ethernet, networking protocols, and router installation and configuration.
• Strong technical and mechanical background with experience using current-generation transport equipment and critical infrastructure, including HVAC systems, high-voltage electrical systems, and DC power plants.
• Knowledge of locating fiber-optic cable, rights-of-way, and as-built documentation.
• Ability to complete installation, decommissioning, and troubleshooting of next-generation and legacy network equipment and circuits, including underground fiber-optic cable locating.
• Valid state vehicle operator’s license and satisfactory driving record in accordance with applicable law and fleet safety requirements.
• Ability to follow personal safety policies and procedures and work safely in outdoor and hazardous conditions.
• Ability to proactively monitor network systems and execute preventive and demand maintenance within allocated time and quality parameters.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, judgment, innovation, alternative analysis, and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
