Principal Research Scientist - Risk (AI)

Location: New York City, United States; hybrid work arrangement

Base salary: $180K–$220K annually, plus equity

What you will do

• Contribute to applied research on infrastructure risk, resilience, and reliability.
• Define research standards for risk modeling, uncertainty quantification, and decision-making.
• Develop predictive models for equipment damage, vegetation failure, outage likelihood and duration, and wildfire-related risk.
• Design decision models assessing the operational and economic consequences of resilience and reliability investments, including asset replacement, vegetation management, and network redesign.
• Quantify the value of additional data, pole loading analysis, visual inspections, new devices, and remote sensing using empirical and analytical methods.
• Help shape the research modeling function, analytical standards, product roadmap, and customer advisory services.

Requirements

• PhD in statistics, applied mathematics, physics, computer science, operations research, engineering, or a comparable record of original research and applied technical work.
• Proven ability to independently define, drive, and execute a substantial research agenda as a senior individual contributor or industry principal.
• Evidence of influential publications, patents, or production systems.
• Recognized subject matter expertise and technical authority, with a history of setting research direction without direct management oversight.
• Extensive experience in probabilistic modeling, uncertainty quantification, model validation, scientific computing, and decision-making under incomplete information.
• Substantial experience modeling operational systems.
• Relevant operational-system topics include insurance or catastrophe modeling, weather prediction and climate hazards, power-system outages, and reliability engineering.
