Senior Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in Sunnyvale, California, United States, or Toronto, Canada

What you will do

• Own backend capabilities including billing, usage metering, quotas, account management, request logs, and metrics.
• Design and implement APIs, backend services, and data pipelines for the Developer Console and Inference Cloud.
• Define service boundaries, data models, and processing patterns while balancing consistency, real-time and batch processing, performance, and cost.
• Build reliable integrations across customer workflows, internal services, and infrastructure with robust failure and retry handling.
• Drive projects from ambiguous requirements through architecture, delivery, and production operation.
• Improve observability, debugging, testing, recovery, and production issue resolution while mentoring engineers and coordinating across frontend, infrastructure, inference, and product teams.

Requirements

• Experience designing APIs, services, data models, and distributed systems, including concurrency, consistency, caching, and failure handling.
• Experience designing, delivering, and operating complex production systems.
• Experience working across backend domains, learning unfamiliar systems, and selecting appropriate technical approaches.
• Experience designing database schemas, evaluating query performance, and building transactional and asynchronous workflows.
• Ability to make sound technical tradeoffs and maintain correctness, maintainability, observability, and long-term system health.
• Ability to work independently on ambiguous problems, manage dependencies, communicate architectural tradeoffs, and mentor engineers.
• Typically 8+ years of industry experience building and operating production software.
• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

• Experience with cloud platforms, developer tools, billing and metering systems, identity and access management, observability, or high-volume data processing.
• Experience with GraphQL, Postgres, and Redis.
