Senior Software Engineer (Distributed Systems)

Location: Pleasanton, California, United States; Flex hybrid work with at least 50% of each quarter spent in the office or in the field.

Annual base salary: $190,100–$285,100 USD for the primary location; additional US locations: $160,100–$285,100 USD.

What you will do

• Build and evolve scalable data-platform capabilities across dbt, Airflow, Trino, Iceberg/S3 Tables, Glue Catalog, security, and infrastructure.
• Create and maintain production dbt projects, including models, transformations, tests, documentation, and semantic definitions.
• Design and operate Airflow workflows with scheduling, dependencies, retries, backfills, and recovery.
• Develop and optimize high-volume analytical workloads on Trino and Iceberg, including partitioning, incremental processing, file layout, and query performance.
• Implement data quality, access control, security, Terraform, CI/CD, and reusable deployment patterns.
• Operate and troubleshoot the full stack, contribute to visualization capabilities, and support and mentor team members.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering or data engineering experience, including 5+ years building or operating production data platforms, lakehouse platforms, or distributed data systems.
• Hands-on experience building and maintaining production dbt Core projects, including project architecture, macros, packages, tests, and large model graphs.
• Strong production SQL and data-modeling experience, including marts, data quality, and semantic or metrics definitions across multiple domains.
• Experience with Airflow or another production workflow orchestration platform, and with Trino or another distributed SQL/query engine.
• Hands-on experience with Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, or Hudi; experience with partitioning, schema evolution, snapshots, table maintenance, and high-volume query and data-layout optimization.
• Experience with cloud object storage and metadata/catalog systems, including S3 Tables, Glue Catalog, or comparable technologies.
• Experience with Python, Java, Go, Scala, or another production programming language.
• Experience with Terraform or similar infrastructure as code, IAM, least privilege, encryption, CI/CD, monitoring, production operations, and reliable multi-tenant data platforms.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in a related field.
• Experience with Apache Superset, Metabase, or similar BI platforms.
• Experience with Kafka, Spark, Flink, or similar distributed technologies.
