Engineer I - Mechanical

Location: On-site at the Special Technologies Laboratory in Santa Barbara, California, United States; travel is required for field deployments.

Salary: $67,704.00–$101,566.40 annually.

National security engineering work is performed for direct customer activities at the Special Technologies Laboratory.

What you will do

• Support national security activities, scientific experiments, field programs, and field deployments of remote sensing sensors and infrastructure.
• Apply established engineering principles and procedures to support mechanical designs and technical strategies.
• Contribute to designs, reports, technical proposals, specifications, and procurement requests.
• Work with senior scientists, senior mechanical engineers, and technologists.
• Follow engineering and technical procedures and perform assigned duties.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in an ABET-accredited engineering program for Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or a calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering, or a Professional Engineer license.
• Skill-building experience demonstrating deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research experience may be recognized.
• Ability to interpret codes and standards applicable to the position.
• Solid foundation in mechanics, materials, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and manufacturing processes.
• Academic or project experience with a 3D CAD platform such as SolidWorks, Creo, NX, or CATIA.
• Familiarity with GD&T, engineering drawings, tolerance stack-ups, and basic metrology.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q-level security clearance, including U.S. citizenship and being at least 18 years old.
• Successful completion of pre-employment drug testing, physical examination, background review, and applicable federal security investigations is required.

Nice to have

• Exposure to prototyping, machining, additive manufacturing, FEA, MATLAB, Python, or data-analysis tools.
