Regional Research Economist (AI)

Location: Seoul, South Korea; hybrid policy requires staff to work from an Anthropic office at least 25% of the time, with some roles requiring more office time.

What you will do

• Build and maintain relationships with academic institutions, policy think tanks, governments, industry, and civil society across the region.
• Advance country- and region-specific research collaborations on AI’s economic impact and translate findings into policy recommendations.
• Contribute to the development and expansion of the Anthropic Economic Index, including regional analysis.
• Design empirical research on AI’s effects on labor markets, the future of work, productivity, task transformation, inequality, displacement, industry disruption, adaptation, GDP, and unemployment.
• Develop methodological approaches using econometrics, machine learning, structural estimation, and novel measurement techniques.
• Work with technical teams to improve measurement infrastructure and data collection, and communicate results through publications, policy briefs, and presentations.

Requirements

• PhD in Economics.
• Strong empirical research track record, including novel data sources combined with economic theory or frontier methods in causal inference and machine learning.
• Demonstrated experience working in the region and relevant regional relationships.
• Proficiency in Python, R, SQL, or similar tools for large-scale data analysis.
• Ability to lead complex research projects from conception through publication.
• Ability to communicate technical findings to diverse audiences.
• Ability to build relationships across academic, policy, and industry communities.
• Logistics list a minimum education of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, and a relevant field of study demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Nice to have

• Experience studying AI’s economic impact, including labor markets, occupational change, task-based technological transformation, large-scale data analysis, econometric methods, large language models for social science, policy-relevant research, experimental or quasi-experimental causal inference, macroeconomic modeling, time series forecasting, agent-based modeling, or large-scale simulation.
• Experience with novel datasets and measurement systems.
• Comfort learning new technical tools and frameworks.
• Strong interest in ensuring AI development benefits humanity.
• Comfort working with AI systems and critically evaluating their capabilities and limitations.
