Senior Software Engineer, Observability (AI)

Location: Chicago, Illinois, United States; hybrid working with office attendance generally Monday through Thursday and flexible remote work on Fridays.

Estimated annual salary for Illinois: $220,900–$325,200.

What you will do

• Design, build, and scale high-performance metrics stack components in Go and Rust on top of open-source technologies, processing terabytes of data daily and hundreds of millions of active series.
• Use AI tools and agents for code design, development, review, testing, operational automation, troubleshooting, and incident response, while helping improve AI-driven engineering practices.
• Optimize observability tools including Prometheus, Grafana, Thanos, Loki, Tempo, and OpenTelemetry for performance, reliability, stability, and usability.
• Build automation for dashboards, alerts, traces, and developer onboarding, and standardize observability tooling with the Platform team.
• Contribute tools and improvements to the open-source and CNCF ecosystem and collaborate with engineering teams on common observability solutions.
• Lead design discussions, mentor engineers and interns, and help shape the platform’s technical direction.

Requirements

• Significant experience, typically around 8 years, in Infrastructure Engineering and/or DevOps focused on observability platforms.
• Hands-on experience using AI tools and agents in daily development and operations, plus practical experience with large language models, including tool or function calling, agents, MCP, RAG, and LLM output evaluation.
• Typically around 4 years of programming experience in Go and/or Rust; experience with performance-sensitive systems is beneficial.
• Experience designing and operating large-scale observability platforms processing massive volumes of metrics, logs, and traces.
• Expertise deploying, operating, and extending open-source observability tools at scale, such as Prometheus, Grafana, Thanos, Loki, Tempo, Cortex, Mimir, or the ELK stack.
• Familiarity with OpenTelemetry and OpenMetrics standards.
• Deep understanding of Kubernetes and Istio architectures, with the ability to contribute scalability and integration improvements.
• Hands-on experience with AWS, GCP, and/or Azure.
• Ability to engage with customers and stakeholders to deliver tailored observability solutions.
• B.S. or M.S. degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
