Associate Editor (Romance Publishing)

Location: On-site in San Francisco five days a week

What you will do

• Read romance manuscripts and diagnose where and why reader engagement declines.
• Use reader feedback and engagement data to identify story weaknesses and develop editorial hypotheses.
• Create editorial plans for major rewrites, including stronger hooks, character arcs, motivations, pacing, and emotional payoffs.
• Execute rewrites with authors and agentic AI tools.
• Run reader tests on revised books, interpret results, and apply the findings to future projects.
• Collaborate with authors, freelance editors, marketing, and the wider content team.

Requirements

• Strong interest in romance fiction, including knowledge of tropes, heat levels, and subgenres.
• Sharp editorial judgment and the ability to explain why a story is not working and how to improve it.
• Ability to develop creative theories from quantitative reader data and communicate them clearly.
• Comfort using AI as a creative tool and evaluating and improving its output.
• 1–3 years of experience in editorial or publishing, an MFA, or similar experience.
• Ability to work on-site in San Francisco five days per week.

Nice to have

• Experience with serialized or web fiction, including Wattpad, Galatea, Kindle Vella, or webtoons.
• Experience providing developmental feedback to writers.
• Fiction, playwriting, or screenwriting experience.
