TL;DR
Mechanical Design Engineer (Avionics Integration) (Aerospace/Defense): Designing and integrating electro-mechanical avionics systems, enclosures, PCBA mounts, wire harness accommodations, and flight-ready hardware with an accent on CAD, EMI/EMC mitigation, environmental testing, and thermal management. Focus on developing rugged, serviceable, and manufacturable assemblies, coordinating ECAD/MCAD interfaces, and qualifying hardware through shock, vibration, thermal, and flight testing.

Location: Huntington Beach, California, United States. The role requires compliance with U.S. ITAR and export-control requirements; applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, lawful permanent residents, refugees, asylees, or eligible to obtain the required authorizations.

Salary: $105,000–$140,000 USD per year, excluding equity and performance-based incentives.

Company

Mach Industries is a rapidly growing defense technology startup developing autonomous, decentralized defense platforms and next-generation manufacturing capabilities.

What you will do

  • Design avionics and PCBA mounting architectures, electronics enclosures, wire harness accommodations, and detailed engineering drawings using 3D CAD and GD&T.
  • Collaborate with electrical, firmware, systems, manufacturing, and test teams on ECAD/MCAD data exchange, schematics, layouts, connector interfaces, and ICD documentation.
  • Develop solutions for shock and vibration isolation, EMI/EMC mitigation, grounding, shielding, connector access, serviceability, thermal management, and reliability.
  • Define and support testing for integrated avionics assemblies, including vibration, shock, thermal cycling, ingress protection, and EMI/EMC testing.
  • Design fixtures and tooling for manufacturing, inspection, qualification, and testing, and author test plans and technical documentation.
  • Support critical development and test milestones, including occasional extended hours and weekends.

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of mechanical engineering experience focused on avionics integration, electronics packaging, or wire harness design; academic, hobby, and project experience is considered.
  • Strong experience with 3D CAD tools such as NX, SolidWorks, or equivalent, including detailed drawings and GD&T according to ASME Y14.5.
  • Hands-on experience with enclosure design, wire harness routing and integration, and EMI/EMC mitigation.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • End-to-end hardware development and integration experience, such as student aerospace or rocketry teams, UAV projects, or automotive electronics integration.
  • Must satisfy U.S. ITAR/export-control eligibility requirements or be eligible to obtain the required U.S. authorizations.

Nice to have

  • Experience with avionics environmental acceptance or qualification testing, including vibration, shock, thermal, and ingress protection testing.
  • Knowledge of thermal management, electronics layout, aerospace or defense standards, and avionics integration requirements.
  • Experience collaborating with electrical engineering teams on layout, connector selection, grounding, and shielding.
  • Experience with first-order, FEA, or Steinberg analysis for PCBA sizing, survivability, and reliability.

Culture & Benefits

  • Startup environment focused on rapid innovation, advanced manufacturing, and national security.
  • Healthcare, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Retirement savings plan and paid time off.
  • Performance-based incentives and equity participation.
  • Funding for continuing education, training, and professional development.
