Location: Full-time, on-site role at Janelia Research Campus, 19700 Helix Drive, Ashburn, Virginia, United States

Salary: $105,000–$131,000 for Project Manager I; $122,635–$153,300 for Project Manager II; $142,385–$178,000 for Project Manager III. Pay type: annual.

What you will do

• Guide AI@HHMI projects from proposal and approval through milestones, final reporting, archiving, and closure.
• Track project budgets, spending, staffing, open positions, contracts, and resource assignments.
• Prepare briefings, meetings, correspondence, reports, and action-item follow-up for program and HHMI leadership.
• Support recruiting, screening interviews, onboarding, and offboarding for AI Scientists, engineers, employees, collaborators, and contractors.
• Organize reviews, seminars, workshops, visits, outreach, conferences, and program communications.
• Coordinate paperwork for collaborations, industry partnerships, contracts, legal matters, technology transfer, and finance.

Requirements

• Master's degree or doctorate in any field.
• At least three years of project management experience, including scientific or industrial research and development programs with budgets, timelines, and staffing.
• Experience using agentic AI tools for practical work while maintaining quality without them.
• Strong follow-through, prioritization, escalation, judgment, and process simplification skills.
• Ability to understand scientific and computational work well enough to collaborate with experimental and computational scientists.
• Ability to work on site at Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, Virginia.

Nice to have

• Science or engineering background.
• Experience in a research institute or university.
• Experience with enterprise systems such as Workday or Microsoft 365.
