TL;DR
Research Associate In Proton Therapy Detector Development (Proton Therapy/Detector Physics): Developing and evaluating a time-of-flight detector system for in-vivo range verification in proton beam therapy with an accent on ultra-fast silicon detectors, timing electronics, and experimental validation. Focus on designing prototype range probes, measuring detector performance, analysing uncertainty, and comparing results with clinical systems and phantom models.
Location: The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Withington, Manchester, United Kingdom
Salary: £38,448 per annum
Company
The hirify.global is an academic research institution working with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust on translational proton therapy research.
What you will do
Design, construct, and optimise a prototype time-of-flight range probe using ultra-fast silicon detectors and timing electronics.
Plan and conduct experimental measurements in a proton therapy research facility.
Characterise detector performance, timing resolution, and calibration against proton range.
Perform validation studies with phantom models and compare results with clinical systems and detectors.
Analyse experimental data, precision, uncertainty, and performance against project objectives.
Collaborate with academic, clinical, and technical colleagues at the hirify.global and The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.

PhD or near completion in physics, medical physics, engineering, or a closely related discipline.
Experimental research experience in detectors, instrumentation, or radiation physics.
Experience independently designing and conducting experiments.
Strong analytical and data-handling skills, including analysis of complex datasets and interpretation of results.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
Nice to have
Experience with time-of-flight measurement techniques or fast timing electronics.
Experience with Monte Carlo simulation tools.
Experience in in-vivo range verification, proton therapy, or translational detector development.
Culture & Benefits
Fixed-term research position with access to specialist proton therapy research infrastructure.
Close links to a leading UK cancer centre and opportunities to contribute to research dissemination and project outputs.
