TL;DR
Senior Safety Analysis Engineer (Nuclear): Developing deterministic reactor safety analyses for the Kaleidos portable microreactor with an accent on thermal-hydraulic modeling, fuel performance, source terms, and radiological consequences. Focus on evaluating transients and accident scenarios, quantifying analytical uncertainty, validating models against testing data, and preparing safety documentation for design and licensing.

Location: 100% onsite at hirify.global's headquarters in El Segundo, California, United States

Salary: $150,025–$211,838 per year, plus equity

Company

hirify.global is a startup developing mass-produced, portable nuclear microreactors. Its first reactor, Kaleidos, is a 1-megawatt fail-safe microreactor designed for rapid deployment and operation for up to five years without refueling.

What you will do

  • Lead deterministic reactor safety analyses for normal operation, transients, anticipated operational occurrences, and postulated accidents.
  • Develop and apply system-level thermal-hydraulic and transient models to evaluate reactor response, operating limits, and safety margins.
  • Perform source term, fuel performance, fission product transport, and radiological consequence analyses.
  • Evaluate modeling uncertainties, sensitivity studies, bounding assumptions, and phenomena rankings.
  • Collaborate with nuclear, mechanical, thermal, materials, controls, testing, and regulatory teams to resolve safety-related technical challenges.
  • Prepare and review calculation packages, safety analysis reports, regulatory documentation, and verified and validated analysis methods.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in reactor safety analysis, thermal-hydraulics, nuclear systems modeling, or related engineering disciplines.
  • Experience with reactor systems or safety analysis codes such as RELAP5-3D, TRACE, SAM, MELCOR, or equivalent tools.
  • Strong knowledge of reactor thermal-hydraulics, transient behavior, heat transfer, deterministic safety analysis, reactor physics, fuel performance, and radiological safety.
  • Experience evaluating uncertainty, sensitivity, conservatism, source terms, radiological consequences, or safety-related performance calculations.
  • Must work 100% onsite at hirify.global's El Segundo headquarters. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.

Nice to have

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with high-temperature gas-cooled reactors, microreactors, advanced reactors, or first-of-a-kind nuclear systems.
  • Experience with TRISO fuel, ORIGEN, MACCS, PARFUME, BISON, MCNP, OpenMC, Serpent, or SCALE.
  • Familiarity with probabilistic risk assessment, licensing basis events, nuclear quality assurance, DOE authorization, NRC licensing, or nuclear industry standards.

Culture & Benefits

  • Substantial incentive stock plan for full-time employees.
  • Comprehensive medical, vision, dental, life, accident, hospital, critical illness, commuter, FSA, and HSA benefits.
  • Eight weeks of paid parental leave for all parents, with additional paid pregnancy leave for California employees.
  • Flexible PTO, a remote workday allocation, daily catered lunch, snacks, drinks, and team events.
  • Work from an El Segundo headquarters near the Pacific Ocean.
