Senior Database Reliability Engineer (PostgreSQL)

Location: Hybrid in McLean, Virginia or Pleasanton, California, with 3 days per week onsite. Candidates based near Tysons Corner are prioritized.

Annual base salary: $90,000–$120,000.

What you will do

• Own the availability, performance, capacity, and lifecycle of production PostgreSQL clusters.
• Manage provisioning, configuration, maintenance, scaling, upgrades, decommissioning, backups, recovery, replication, and high availability.
• Build monitoring, alerting, automation, tooling, and self-service workflows for database operations.
• Collaborate with engineering teams on schema migrations, query patterns, and PostgreSQL best practices.
• Lead database incident response, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and incident reviews.
• Mentor DBREs, maintain runbooks, and participate in on-call rotations and planned maintenance windows.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience running PostgreSQL in large-scale production or SaaS environments.
• Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL internals, including MVCC, vacuum, WAL, locking, concurrency, and query planning.
• Production experience with capacity planning, backup and point-in-time recovery, replication, high availability, upgrades, indexing, SQL tuning, partitioning, migrations, and incident response.
• Experience collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams and participating in on-call rotations and scheduled maintenance.
• Fluent spoken and written English required.

Nice to have

• Experience with PostgreSQL at scale, Patroni, PgBouncer, zero-downtime operations, and Kubernetes.
• Knowledge of Linux, CI/CD, GitOps, Jenkins, ArgoCD, Ansible, Python, Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, or OpenTelemetry.
• Experience with public cloud platforms, especially OCI, YugabyteDB, or Apache Cassandra.
• Experience using AI-assisted engineering tools for troubleshooting, automation, or documentation.
