Senior Scientist (Defense Technology)

Salary: $180,000–$210,000 per year

What you will do

• Provide strategic scientific guidance for complex, multidisciplinary DARPA MXO research programs and emerging technology opportunities.
• Independently assess performer approaches, technical progress, test evidence, failure modes, and recovery options.
• Shape program concepts, technical milestones, evaluation criteria, trade studies, and transition paths for breakthrough technologies.
• Advise DARPA program managers on planning, execution, cost, schedule, risk, testing, and transition throughout the R&D lifecycle.
• Coordinate with performers, government partners, test organizations, transition stakeholders, and technical experts through reviews, demonstrations, and site visits.
• Prepare technical assessments, review briefings, decision materials, trip reports, and program documentation for leadership and external stakeholders.

Requirements

• Master's degree and 15 or more years of relevant experience.
• U.S. citizenship required for security-clearance eligibility.
• Senior-level experience planning and developing complex R&D projects for defense organizations.
• Expertise in conducting sophisticated research, independently analyzing complex technical issues, and recommending credible solutions and risk-reduction actions.
• Senior technical leadership experience, including advising advanced research initiatives and recognition as an expert in a relevant scientific or technical field.
• Strong record of publications, technical contributions, and thought leadership.

Nice to have

• Ten or more years of experience with one or more DARPA programs.
• Seven or more years working with DARPA program managers.
• Experience connecting foundational research to prototypes, demonstrations, military systems, or commercial transition pathways.
