Research Technician (Protein Biochemistry)

Salary: £29,588–£32,080 per annum, depending on relevant experience

What you will do

• Express and purify recombinant proteins using bacterial, insect, and mammalian expression systems.
• Apply affinity, ion-exchange, and size-exclusion chromatography techniques.
• Culture and manipulate bacterial, insect, and mammalian cells for protein production and experimental studies.
• Perform cloning, PCR, site-directed mutagenesis, electrophoresis, and Western blotting.
• Conduct protein biochemistry experiments investigating protein structure, interactions, and function.
• Provide technical guidance, maintain equipment and inventories, organise laboratory supplies, and support laboratory safety compliance.

Requirements

• Relevant biological science qualification at QCF level 6, such as a bachelor's degree, or appropriate school-level qualifications supported by substantial relevant research laboratory experience.
• Strong experience with protein biochemistry, recombinant protein expression, and protein purification.
• Strong analytical and quantitative image analysis skills for interpreting and evaluating scientific data.
• Excellent organisation and communication skills, with the ability to prioritise activities and meet deadlines.
• Ability to work independently with accuracy, attention to detail, initiative, and experimental reproducibility.
• Applicants must already have the right to work in the United Kingdom; Skilled Worker visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice to have

• Experience culturing and manipulating bacterial, insect, and mammalian cells.
• Experience with molecular biology and biochemical analysis techniques, including SDS-PAGE and Western blotting.
• Experience with light microscopy, including total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy.
• Strong interest in mechanistic cell biology and biochemistry.
