TL;DR
Staff Engineer - Recommendations (ML): Building and operating scalable data pipelines, backend services, APIs, and personalization systems for VRChat content discovery and social experiences with an accent on data engineering, real-time recommendations, and large-scale processing. Focus on designing analytical and real-time data models, implementing Spark and Kafka processing, and evolving recommendation capabilities from heuristics to data-backed personalization.

What you will do
- Develop, maintain, and optimize scalable data pipelines, backend services, and APIs for recommendations, content discovery, groups, and events.
- Design data models and schemas for analytical workloads and real-time recommendation systems.
- Build data processing jobs with large-scale technologies such as Spark and Kafka.
- Implement backend infrastructure including REST and WebSocket APIs, caching, queueing, and cloud orchestration.
- Collaborate with data scientists, product managers, and engineers to make reliable data available for personalization.
- Help respond to production outages when needed.
Requirements
- 3+ years of software engineering experience focused on data engineering and scalable backend systems for SaaS products or online platforms.
- Experience building and optimizing production-grade ETL/ELT pipelines.
- Strong SQL skills and experience optimizing analytical and high-throughput real-time database access.
- Experience with Spark, Hadoop, Beam, Kafka, AWS or Google Cloud, and technologies such as Python, JavaScript/Node.js, Mongo, and Redis.
- Experience with Elasticsearch, data warehousing, and machine learning systems.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a remote, cross-functional environment.
Nice to have
- Experience building content discovery or recommendation systems.
- Experience with online communities, VR, social networks, social graphs, or user-generated content.
- Experience with consumer products, e-commerce, or two-sided marketplaces.
