2027 Summer Intern, Data Engineer (Reston, VA or Remote)

Location: Reston, Virginia or remote within the United States. The 10-week internship is expected to run from June through August; housing and relocation assistance are not provided.

Salary: $37,855.00–$77,869.00 per year based on full-time employment.

What you will do

• Develop and test enterprise data pipelines under the guidance of senior data engineers.
• Integrate structured and semi-structured data from multiple sources.
• Write SQL and code to transform, validate, and prepare data for analysis.
• Monitor data quality and troubleshoot pipeline issues.
• Contribute to data models, source-to-target mappings, and technical documentation.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies, code reviews, design discussions, and present project outcomes.

Requirements

• United States Citizenship or Permanent Work Authorization is required.
• At least 30 completed college-level credit hours by the start date in computer science, data engineering, information systems, software engineering, or a related field.
• Academic or project experience with SQL and at least one programming language.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Nice to have

• Bachelor’s degree and enrollment in a master’s program or completion of at least 9 graduate credits.
• Experience with Python, Java, or Scala.
• Familiarity with databases, data structures, ETL/ELT concepts, cloud platforms, data warehouses, APIs, Git, or orchestration tools.
• Exposure to Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, Databricks, Snowflake, or Spark.
• Experience from coursework, research, personal projects, or prior internships.
