Database Administrator (AWS)

Location: Remote within the United States; must reside in the United States

Partners with federal agencies, including the Department of Veterans Affairs, to deliver technology, data, and program management solutions.

What you will do

• Administer, maintain, and optimize production and non-production databases for an extended VA data migration effort.
• Install, configure, patch, upgrade, monitor, and tune databases across on-premises and AWS-hosted environments.
• Manage backup, recovery, replication, high availability, disaster recovery, access controls, encryption, and auditing.
• Provision and manage AWS database resources, including RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, and EC2-hosted databases.
• Support schema design, data loading, conversion, validation, API-driven data exchange, and testing with analysts and developers.
• Document database standards, configurations, migration procedures, and lessons learned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or a related field.
• 6+ years of database administration experience, including substantial data migration experience.
• Hands-on experience with relational databases such as SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, or MySQL.
• Experience with AWS database services, SQL, and scripting with Python, Shell, or similar tools.
• Strong knowledge of database security, backup and recovery, replication, high availability, and disaster recovery.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Minimum Background Investigation suitability determination.

Nice to have

• AWS certification, such as AWS Certified Database – Specialty, Solutions Architect, or SysOps Administrator.
• Experience with VA or federal government data migration initiatives.
• Familiarity with the Empower platform, VA systems, ETL tools, or data integration platforms.
• Experience with Terraform or AWS CloudFormation.
• Senior or lead database administration experience on large-scale migration projects.
