Data Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco, California, or Seattle, Washington, United States. San Francisco employees generally work in the office on Mondays and Thursdays; Seattle employees follow local hybrid policies.

Salary: $200,000–$300,000 per year, plus equity.

What you will do

• Design and build transformation pipelines that convert internal models into clean, documented analytical tables.
• Develop dimensional models with stable naming, clear grain, consistent date and status handling, and correct authorization scoping.
• Establish monitoring and alerting for data freshness and quality.
• Build reporting architecture supporting time series, cohorts, aging, compliance windows, and point-in-time snapshots.
• Own reporting for a product module, including standard and customer-specific reports and collaboration with customer launch teams.
• Develop scoped embedded analytics, upsertable importers, data-mapping tooling, and statewide reporting infrastructure.

Requirements

• 5–10 years of software engineering experience, primarily in data engineering with secondary backend web experience.
• Strong SQL skills and experience reasoning about large online application schemas and dimensional modeling.
• Experience building and maintaining tested, documented transformation pipelines with lineage.
• Ability to translate government program and compliance-reporting requirements into effective data models.
• Experience with a modern BI tool and its modeling layer, such as Looker, Sigma, or Power BI.
• Ability to define a new data practice, build reusable assets, and use modern AI tooling to accelerate engineering delivery.

Nice to have

• Government or gov-tech data experience.
• Familiarity with child welfare data standards and federal reporting, including AFCARS, NYTD, or CCWIS.
