Principal Data Scientist (Applied Machine Learning)

Location: San Francisco Home Office, United States; primary location at 180 Montgomery St, San Francisco, California. A New York salary band is also listed.

Salary: $143,000–$286,000 annual salary in San Francisco; $132,000–$264,000 in New York. Additional performance bonuses and potential stock compensation may apply.

What you will do

• Translate product and business questions into scalable machine learning solutions.
• Build, evaluate, and iterate on deep learning models for personalization, recommendation, ranking, and ad targeting.
• Design offline metrics and online experimentation frameworks to measure model and system performance.
• Partner with Product and Engineering across multiple teams to define scope and navigate technical tradeoffs.
• Establish best practices for robust, scalable, and maintainable modeling and ML development.
• Provide technical leadership through design reviews, hands-on problem solving, and mentorship of data scientists.

Requirements

• Extensive experience designing, training, and deploying machine learning models for real-world systems.
• Strong foundations in machine learning and statistics, including representation learning, deep learning, optimization, experimentation, and model evaluation.
• Production experience with Python and distributed data tools such as PySpark.
• Experience with modern ML frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX.
• Ability to lead ambiguous, technically complex initiatives from problem formulation through deployment and evolution.
• Bachelor’s degree with 3 years of relevant experience, master’s degree with 1 year of experience, or 5 years of experience in analytics or a related field.

Nice to have

• PhD in machine learning, computer science, information technology, operations research, statistics, applied mathematics, or econometrics.
• Publications or active peer-review experience in related journals or conferences.
• Experience with Scala, R, Spark, scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or Torch.
• Knowledge of WCAG 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and digital accessibility practices.
