Staff Software Engineer, OIN (Identity)

Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Annual base salary: CAD 160,000–220,000

What you will do

• Lead technical discovery, architecture definition, delivery planning, and estimation for ambiguous product requirements.
• Design and evolve APIs, data models, integration frameworks, and security foundations for the Okta Integration Network.
• Drive technical decisions across multi-team dependencies in partnership with product, architecture, and design.
• Modernize a large, long-lived production system while maintaining backward compatibility and customer reliability.
• Own production health through observability, root-cause analysis, vulnerability remediation, and follow-through on fixes.
• Mentor engineers, raise technical standards, and promote AI-assisted development practices across the team.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software development experience with technical leadership and mentorship experience.
• Deep proficiency in Java or a comparable strongly typed backend language and framework.
• Experience designing and operating large-scale distributed systems in AWS, GCP, or Azure, including caching, asynchronous processing, and large-scale data migrations.
• Strong knowledge of identity and access protocols such as OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML, and SCIM.
• Experience building external-facing APIs and integration platforms with attention to versioning, backward compatibility, and developer experience.
• Strong written communication and a security- and compliance-aware approach to engineering.

Nice to have

• Experience with specialized enterprise systems and strict compliance or data-handling requirements.
• Experience with self-service developer platforms or partner and ISV ecosystems.
• Frontend experience with React or a similar technology.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
