TL;DR
Applications Engineer (HVAC Controls): Developing and deploying HVAC system applications, control logic, integrations, and application software with an accent on building automation systems, system-level design, and field validation. Focus on designing testing strategies with simulation and Hardware-in-the-Loop testing, resolving field issues, and supporting pilot deployments and customer projects.

Location: St Paul, Minnesota, United States; hybrid schedule with onsite work Monday through Thursday and flexible work location on Fridays. Travel up to 20% is required, including customer visits, field events, and job site work.

Annual base salary: $105,228.33–$168,700.00.

What you will do

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for HVAC controls fulfillment, system applications, interfaces, and third-party integrations.
  • Define functional requirements and design, develop, and deploy custom applications, control logic, sequences of operation, and application software across supervisory and edge platforms.
  • Establish application testing strategies using system modeling, simulation tools, automated testing frameworks, laboratory testing, and Hardware-in-the-Loop testing.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, segment, sales, and operations teams to evaluate feasibility, resolve technical issues, and support commercialization.
  • Support field trials, pilot deployments, customer projects, site rollouts, and real-world validation of new HVAC applications.
  • Prepare engineering bulletins, application guides, best practices, and project specifications, and present technical topics to internal and external audiences.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, controls engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related technical field; extensive directly relevant field experience may substitute for the degree.
  • 8+ years of experience in building automation systems, HVAC controls execution, or system application engineering.
  • Hands-on experience delivering HVAC controls projects from initial handoff through system turnover is strongly desired.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical audiences and influence cross-functional teams without formal authority.
  • Strong project management, analysis, problem resolution, judgment, decision-making, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work onsite Monday through Thursday in St Paul, Minnesota, and travel up to 20%.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with software development principles, scripting languages such as Python or JavaScript, and automation workflow logic.
  • Experience with multi-protocol gateway integrations, API-based smart building connections, and cloud-to-edge BAS network architectures.
