TL;DR
Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer, Large Optics Structures (Deep-UV Fusion Laser Optics): Designing mounts, support structures, and precision adjustment mechanisms for meter-class segmented mirrors in high-energy deep-UV laser beam transport with an accent on stiffness-to-mass, thermal stability, vibration resistance, and optical performance. Focus on structural-thermal-optical analysis, modal testing, athermal materials, cleanroom integration, metrology, and full lifecycle ownership from concept through measured hardware.
Location: On-site in Denver, Colorado, United States
Company
develops inertial fusion energy technology and advanced laser architectures to accelerate the deployment of fusion power plants.
What you will do
- Develop mounts and support methodologies for meter-class segmented and lightweight mirrors used in deep-UV, high-energy laser beam transport.
- Design trusses, weldments, optical benches, adjustment mechanisms, and vibration isolation systems for large optics.
- Perform structural-thermal-optical performance analysis, including static, modal, random-vibration, and thermal FEA, and correlate models with measured data.
- Specify athermal materials and stress-limited mounting approaches, and design handling, lifting, installation, and removal fixtures.
- Support optical metrology, alignment, cleanroom assembly, integration, testing, and troubleshooting of prototype and production hardware.
- Create interface control documents, detailed CAD models, GD&T drawings, technical data packages, and assembly and test plans; mentor mechanical engineers and present at design reviews.
Requirements
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related field.
- 10+ years of opto-mechanical engineering experience with full lifecycle ownership of precision optical hardware.
- Experience designing mounts and support structures for large optics, including trusses or weldments, multi-degree-of-freedom adjustment, and vibration characterization.
- Strong FEA skills in static, modal, random-vibration, and thermal analysis using tools such as Ansys, Abaqus, or Nastran.
- Fluency in 3D CAD, preferably NX, and experience creating GD&T drawings according to ASME Y14.5.
- Practical knowledge of machining, welding, fabrication, athermal design, optical tolerancing, cleanroom environments, high vacuum, and high voltage.
Nice to have
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience with segmented mirror arrays, large-format mirrors, lightweight substrates, active alignment, or vibration isolation systems.
- Background in high-energy laser systems, deep-UV optics, optical bonding, large telescopes, lithography, or high-energy laser facilities.
Culture & Benefits
- Hands-on work across optics laboratories, integration areas, cleanrooms, and prototype hardware development.
- Technical leadership within a small, fast-moving engineering team.
- Medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, disability coverage, and paid parental leave.
- 401(k) with company matching up to 6%, plus eligible employee equity.
- Flexible paid time off, paid sick time, 13 company-paid holidays, and an annual company shutdown.
