Staff Software Engineer - Strategic Agentic Surfaces (AI)

Location: Remote within the United States, Seattle, or Chicago; hybrid/remote

Salary: $174,000–$262,000 per year, plus annual performance bonus and long-term incentives

What you will do

• Own the architecture of Gavel Exec, including dispatcher and specialist agents, tool interfaces, harness semantics, retries, structured outputs, guardrails, and cost and latency budgets.
• Define evaluation standards, build offline evaluation infrastructure, instrument online acceptance rates, and use results to gate releases.
• Lead the full-stack technical roadmap covering live indexing, hybrid search, playbook grounding, and precedent grounding.
• Drive platform decisions involving infrastructure, identity, tenancy, data residency, AI platform integrations, MCP surfaces, security, and compliance.
• Raise engineering quality through design reviews, pairing, technical direction, mentoring, hiring, and interviews while remaining hands-on.

Requirements

• 10+ years of production software development experience, including 2+ years shipping LLM-based products and 5+ years in service-oriented, continuously deployed environments.
• Production ownership of an agentic system with multi-step tool use, specialist orchestration, failure handling, tracing, cost and latency management, and incident response.
• Practical expertise in prompt and context engineering, structured outputs, function calling, retrieval, reranking, evaluation design, fine-tuning trade-offs, and model routing.
• Strong distributed systems and cloud infrastructure experience, including containers, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and enterprise identity.
• Fluency in TypeScript or Python and experience across React, Node or Python services, and PostgreSQL.
• Experience building full-stack web and agentic applications and setting technical direction for engineering teams.
