Data Flywheel Infrastructure Engineer (AI)

Location: Mountain View, New York, or Redmond, United States; office attendance is expected at least four days per week for employees living within the applicable distance of a designated Microsoft office.

Salary: USD $142,800–$274,800 per year across the United States; USD $188,000–$304,200 per year in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area.

What you will do

• Build scalable infrastructure for ingesting, processing, curating, versioning, and serving first-party and third-party data for pre-training and post-training.
• Implement governance and compliance controls covering licensing, consent, PII protection, access control, retention, deletion, geographic restrictions, approvals, and auditability.
• Develop automated pipelines for classification, filtering, deduplication, quality scoring, semantic enrichment, and policy-aware dataset construction.
• Connect model evaluations and failure signals to failure mining, hard-example discovery, targeted data generation, training, and evaluation feedback loops.
• Build synthetic and AI-native data pipelines using LLMs, VLMs, and agents while preserving provenance across human-created, first-party, third-party, generated, and derived data.
• Develop metrics and observability for dataset quality, coverage, diversity, contamination, duplication, compliance, attribution, and model capability improvement.

Requirements

• Master's degree in computer science, mathematics, software engineering, computer engineering, or a related field with 3+ years of relevant experience; or bachelor's degree with 4+ years of relevant experience; equivalent experience is also accepted.
• Software engineering experience with Python, SQL, and Spark, Flink, or Ray.
• Experience in software development, data engineering, data science, data modeling, or business analytics.
• Ability to work from a designated Microsoft office at least four days per week when located within the applicable distance of Mountain View, New York, or Redmond.

Nice to have

• Experience with AI training-data governance, provenance, licensing, consent management, PII handling, policy enforcement, and auditable lineage.
• Experience with third-party datasets, licensed content, data partnerships, privacy-preserving processing, de-identification, confidential computing, or secure data collaboration.
• Experience building evaluation, failure-mining, data-generation, training, synthetic-data, model-grading, or active-learning feedback loops.
• Experience with multimodal or agentic datasets and modern LLM training workflows, including pre-training, SFT, reinforcement learning, post-training, and evaluation.
