TL;DR
Associate Director, Computational Biology (Biomedical Data): Leading multidisciplinary teams that curate, govern, harmonize, and activate large-scale biomedical data resources with an accent on FAIR principles, GA4GH standards, multi-omic analysis, and community engagement. Focus on building responsible data-sharing practices, coordinating consortium research, developing team capability, and applying computational biology methods to complex spatial and imaging datasets.

Location: Remote or hybrid within the United States; travel twice per year for on-site events in Seattle, WA.

Annual salary: $140,000–$180,000.

What you will do

  • Lead a multidisciplinary team of biomedical data managers, data engineers, community engagement staff, and program managers.
  • Direct the curation, annotation, lifecycle management, harmonization, and quality improvement of large-scale biomedical and multi-omic datasets.
  • Develop data governance, access-control, privacy, compliance, and responsible data-sharing practices.
  • Advance FAIR principles, GA4GH standards, data-use ontologies, federated access, and genomic data-sharing frameworks.
  • Build researcher communities, coordinate external scientists and consortium partners, and represent Sage with funders and stakeholders.
  • Lead funding strategies and grant proposals while contributing hands-on computational biology, statistical, and bioinformatic work.

Requirements

  • Must be located in the United States for the remote or hybrid arrangement.
  • Master’s or PhD in biology, bioinformatics, data science, library/information science, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in scientific research, biomedical data management, data governance, research data curation, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of directly managing, mentoring, or developing data managers, computational biologists, bioinformaticians, or community engagement professionals.
  • Experience with open science, FAIR data principles, responsible human-subjects data sharing, GA4GH or comparable frameworks, and multi-institutional collaborations.
  • Track record of securing research funding, including at least one competitive NIH or comparable award.

Nice to have

  • Experience with OMOP, FHIR, GA4GH Phenopackets, Data Use Ontology, Synapse, dbGaP, or EGA.
  • Experience with imaging and spatial biology data, including spatial transcriptomics, multiplexed tissue imaging, or digital pathology.
  • Experience with AI-assisted or agentic workflows for data curation, validation, or community support.
  • Experience with NIH-funded research consortia, public-private partnerships, or public-facing scientific community engagement.
